Asthma in Children and Adolescents
Knowledge Path

Introduction

This knowledge path directs readers to a selection of current, high-quality resources about asthma in children and adolescents, its prevalence, and its impact on homes, schools, and communities. The knowledge path includes tools for improving asthma management and care and staying abreast of new developments in pediatric asthma research. It can be used by health professionals, program administrators, policymakers, researchers, and community advocates to learn more about the topic, for program development, and to locate training resources and information to answer specific questions. Separate sections point to resources about environmental triggers and medications and monitoring. Separate briefs focus on resources for families and resources about asthma management in school. The knowledge path has been compiled by the MCH Library at Georgetown University and will be updated periodically.

Overview

See Asthma and Children Fact Sheet (2010) by the American Lung Association (ALA), which briefly describes asthma symptoms, triggers, treatment, prevalence in the United States, mortality and hospitalizations, and health care costs, and the impact of asthma on school absenteeism. Also see the Child Trends data brief, Asthma (2010), which presents data about asthma in children and adolescents, including its prevalence, trends, and differences by gender, race and ethnicity, usual source of health care, type of insurance coverage, and food stamp receipt.

Resources for Professionals

Important resource: The main guidelines for managing asthma are the Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma (2007) by the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP).

Databases

The databases listed below are excellent tools for identifying data, additional literature and research, and programs about asthma in children and adolescents. Many of the entries below contain tips on how to use the databases efficiently. Please note that databases vary in how terms should be entered; for example, some require quotation marks and others don't. Enter search phrases as shown in bold below.

Data
  • Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DRC). Data from the National Survey of Children's Health, 2003 and 2007, and the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, 2001 and 2005/2006. For data about asthma, see the search box for the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, 2001 & 2005/2006, and select Condition-Specific. Choose a state or nationwide, select a report format, and select a condition (i.e., asthma). Click on Next to get your profile. DRC is a project of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI).

  • Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP): HCUPnet. Health statistics and information on hospital inpatient and emergency department utilization at the national, regional, and state levels, including use of hospitals by children. To identify data about hospital use related to asthma in children and adolescents, select National Statistics on Children. Select Researcher, medical professional. Under type of query, select Statistics on specific diagnoses or procedures. Select a year (e.g., 2006). Select Diagnoses grouped by Clinical Classifications Software (CCS). Select Principal diagnosis. Under the field, Browse all CCS categories, scroll to 128 Asthma. Click on Next. Select the outcomes and measures of interest (e.g., Number of discharges) and click on Next. Select patient and hospital characteristics (e.g., All patients in all hospitals) and click on Next. View your results. HCUP is an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

  • Health Data Interactive. Data tables with national health statistics. Tables can be customized by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and geographic location. Enter asthma in the Search Tables box and click on Go for data about asthma prevalence and asthma-related hospital discharges, emergency department visits, and mortality. HDI is a service of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

  • National Quality Measures Clearinghouse™ (NQMC).
