Maternal and Child Health History

Special Collections of the MCH Library

Owing to their age, many of these materials are not available electronically; limited quantities of photocopies and loans are available from the MCH Library. Library staff can help identify other sources that can provide access to the information. All materials can be viewed at the MCH Library at Georgetown University. Contact library staff for help with accessing information from other sources or to arrange an appointment to view the materials at the library.

New! Digitization Project
The MCH Library has initiated a project to digitalize approximately 450 items published by the Children's Bureau between 1912 and 1969 and several additional items that discuss the history of the Children's Bureau, ranging from brochures to short reports to bound volumes. The MCH Library currently contains these items in hard copy. These items can be identified by searching in the sidebar search window or in the Advanced Search page using the phrase "Children's Bureau" (with quotation marks). Documents are being posted in 2007.

Records of the Children's Bureau 1912-1969
Microfilm collection of 290 reels containing materials from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. The finding aid for this collection, The Children's Bureau: Documentary sources from the National Archives (Alexandria, VA: Chadwyck-Healey, 1993) lists documents according to their sequence on the microfilm and provides author, title, date, and sometimes source of the material. Types of materials include reports, articles, conference materials, addresses and speeches, government documents, memoranda, drafts, and other documents. The aid is divided into six parts: child welfare, child legislation, Children's Bureau history, MCH, Children's Bureau Merritt files, and Children's Bureau chief's files. There is no subject index.

William McConway Hiscock Collection on Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment
Collection of 159 items, primarily reports and articles, published between 1973 and 1982. A bibliography lists the documents by subject categories, including (1) direct services, such as outreach, support, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and continuing care; (2) program management at the state and local levels, including planning, budgeting, staff development, resource development, marketing and promotion, quality control, reporting requirements, research, demonstrations, and evaluation; and (3) program management at the federal level, with categories similar to those at the state level, as well as financing, policy, and legislation. Abstracts are included for 124 of the listed items.

More recent materials on Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) are available in the MCH Library.

Note: EPSDT has been variously called Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment and Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment; document descriptions in the database reflect the name used in the document.
